After consultation – it was decided to treat my cancer with radiation. To prepare for the actual radiation – I first had to have a procedure called Rectal Spacer and Prostate Fiducial Marker Placement. Without any anethesia – three carbon markers were placed in my Prostate with long needles. These markers
show the radiation machine where to direct the radiation. The Rectal Spacer was some type of goop (also placed using long needles) that protects the rectum – from the radiation – during treatment. The markers remain in my Prostate forever – the Rectal Spacer goop disappers in about six months.
The next step in to tatoo three small perminent black dots – one on each hip and one below my belly button. These also help direct the radiation to the correct areas.
The actual radiation takes place under a machine while laying on a table. I was drawn into the machine and the radiation started. I felt nothing during the process.
There are side effects that can last for a matter of months. They are litterally a pain in the butt – and other places – but it’s better than letting the cancer spread to other areas. The radiation takes some time to do its thing.
The location – where all this was done – was at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Department of Radiation Oncology. I sent the following to that location following my radiation:
I am sincerely grateful to all of you who have helped put a handle on my little Prostate Gremlins. I thank you all – Patient Receptionists, Nurses, Technicians, Schedulers, and Doctors.
I like to write Rhymes. English Teachers would not approve of my style; however, at Eighty – I figure I can break a few rules. I wrote the follow regarding my experience with all of you:
If you’re Needing Radiation,
They’re the Best in This Here Nation.
I now Call them Bullseyes Hitters,
They will Zap your Nasty Critters!
Started Out as Plain Old Bob,
Ended Up as Radi Rob!
