Fond Memories of a Blue 1953 Chevy Pickup

As a Senior in college – in 1966 – I had saved up enough money to purchase a car.  My intention was to buy a car; however, when I saw this pickup I just had to have it.  It was in mint condition and it cost me $300.00.  It looked just like the pickup in the photo to the left.  It had a newly covered leather bench front seat – I really liked this truck.

It turned out to be the vehicle where I took – my wife to be – on our first date.  My roommate also had a date that night so we crammed four people into the front seat of this pickup.  It was a stick shift that was on the floor – shifting was a challenge with that many people in the pickup.

I made a storage box for it out of wood; however, I measured incorrectly and the box would not fit crossways in the pickup bed.  I had to place it along one side of the bed – it looked kind of funny but it worked fine.  I was not very good at carpentry back then – still in the same boat now.

I had it for about five months, and then one day, an electrical fire started inside the dashboard.  I did not have a fire extinguisher so it just had to burn itself out.  I did not have enough money to get it repaired so I sold it “as is.”  I went without a vehicle – until the Spring – when I had enough money to purchase another vehicle.  It was a boring Dodge Dart but it was blue – as close as I ever got to owning another pickup.  I wish I still had that Old Chevy!!!
