“Yuka”

I don’t have many apps on my mobile phone – the ones that came with the phone – I really never use.  My wife told me about “Yuka” so I downloaded it.  Here is what it does:

AI Overview (On Google)

The Yuka app is a free, mobile app that scans food and personal care product barcodes to assess their health impact and provide a simple ratingIt uses a color-coded system (green, yellow, red) to indicate a product’s nutritional value, presence of additives, and organic certification. The app also offers detailed product information and can suggest healthier alternatives.

Here’s a more detailed look at the app:
    • Scans barcodes: Yuka scans the barcodes of food and personal care products to analyze their ingredients.
    • Provides a score: It assigns a score (0-100) based on nutritional quality, presence of additives, and organic status.
  • Color-coded rating system: Green indicates high scores, yellow indicates moderate scores, and red indicates low scores.
  • Detailed product information: Users can access detailed information about the product’s ingredients, nutritional values, and potential health risks.
  • Suggests healthier alternatives: When a product is rated poorly, Yuka can suggest healthier alternatives.
  • Independent project: Yuka is a 100% independent project, meaning no brand or manufacturer can influence its product evaluations or recommendations.
  • No ads: The app is ad-free.

After I downloaded the app – I got the following in an email:

It amazes me that these young people can put all of this together.  I tried it on some of my “snacks” – OH NO – I am going to have to throw all of them away.  Well – maybe not.

How do they set up a data base like this; however, I did use it on some of my locally produced products and I guess that I just have to wing it with them – they were not in the Yuka database.  Maybe I’ll just eat a bunch of local garbage and be in ignorant bliss – and hope they don’t get weaseled into their database.  All things considered – I think this is a very useful app and I will use it.
